Grace Dell Aquila Biography

“When you’re the youngest of seven kids, you have to develop a strong vocal technique just to be heard at the dinner table,” says vocalist Grace Dell Aquila. From an early age, Grace was definitely heard!
Dell Aquila quickly became a favorite singer in her hometown, Massapequa Park, New York, performing at many municipal functions and wedding ceremonies.
Strong vocal cords and a lively spirit soon brought young Grace to the forefront of the theatrical stage in High School. After assuming many of the leading roles in the productions at Farmingdale High School, Long Island, she was granted a full university scholarship to the American Musical and Dramatic Academy of New York City. By day, Grace studied under some of Manhattan’s finest performing arts professors, and at night, she could be found fronting various musical groups on the Long Island music circuit. She eventually co-founded pop-rock group Another Colour, and has been singing lead for the band in excess of twenty five years.
With Another Colour, Grace has released multiple studio recordings and music videos. In 1995, an Another Colour music video, “Since It Is So,” was nominated in three out of six categories of the Roadrunner Music Video contest held at Coyote's of Louisville, Kentucky. Grace was in attendance at the video awards ceremony in Louisville for the viewing of the Another Colour video on multiple large screens.
With Another Colour, Dell Aquila has been singing for audiences from Manhattan to St. Louis. She has shared the stage with many national touring acts, including, Pat Benatar, REO Speedwagon, Grand Funk, Arlo Guthrie, Warren Zevon, The Marhsall Tucker Band, and others.
Positive reviews of Grace's vocal ability appear often in newspapers and entertainment tabloids. In an article from Long Island’s largest newspaper, Newsday, staff writer Denise Flaim wrote, “Delligatti's [now Dell Aquila] fiery stage presence—including a leonine mane that definitely qualifies as big hair—takes a back seat to her powerful voice and dramatic delivery.” In 2003, a long-standing music nightclub in Louisville Kentucky, the Phoenix Hill Tavern, voted Grace “Louisville's Best Female Singer” in a contest that the nationally recognized venue was conducting. She was invited to sing with Louisville's 2003 All-Star Rock-n-Roll Band during the awards ceremony.
Grace and Another Colour have made music on various occasions with New York Yankee outfielder (and drummer) Paul O'Neill. Dell Aquila appears performing with Paul O'Neill on a fundraising video that was available for purchase at the outfielder's official internet website. All proceeds from the sale of the video at O'Neill's website went to benefit disadvantaged children.
Another Colour's association with the all-star Yankee outfielder brought Grace to sing the National Anthem at Yankee Stadium to a sell-out crowd of more than 40,800 attendees. Grace sang the Star Spangled Banner prior to a Yankees-Bluejays game in August of 1999 at the world-famous baseball stadium. Her rendition of the National Anthem was given during an emotional twenty-minute tribute ceremony to commemorate deceased Yankee all-star catcher Thurman Munson.
Grace has decades of recording studio experience and has participated in literally hundreds of studio recordings. While living on Long Island, she was the studio session vocalist for the Audio Recording Technology Institute of New York. Grace often participated in more than three recording sessions per week at the New York studio. In 1991 she released a ten-song compact disc that features guest appearances by professional musicians Doug Stegmeyer and Richie Cannata, two veteran members of the Billy Joel Band. Many of Grace's studio recordings have earned awards and have gained national recognition. She sang on four Another Colour original songs that placed in the top-ten percent of Billboard Magazine’s 1992 world-wide song contest.
Her music has been aired on New York’s most influential radio stations, including WXRK (92.3 FM), WBAB (102.3 FM), WRCN (103.9 FM), among others. Long Island’s Cablevision News 12 channel has invited Dell Aquila multiple times for interviews about her singing career with celebrity anchorwoman Lea Tyrrell. In Kentucky, Dick Irby of Fox 41 news has also interviewed the singer during television broadcasts.
In addition to her vocal ability, Grace is skilled in computer graphic design and music marketing. She was an employee of Long Island's most celebrated entertainment magazine, the Good Times Magazine, and worked for many years as the principal typesetter at her friends' (the Metzendorf family) Sir Speedy Print shop in New York.
In 1993, Five Towns Music College of New York had Grace give lectures on music marketing during a weekend music conference at the university.
Today Dell Aquila and Another Colour are at work performing in the Kentucky, Tennessee, Indiana, and Ohio areas where they plan to continue writing original music and releasing recordings on a regular basis.

Paul Dell Aquila Biography

Paul Dell Aquila is a faculty member of the University of Louisville. He has been teaching six courses at the university's School of Music in the music theory division since 2003. His class schedule includes Sixteenth Century Counterpoint, Eighteenth Century Counterpoint, and Music Theory Review (for graduate students), as well as Music Theory III, Music Theory IV, and Music Analysis (for undergraduate students). In addition to traditional classes in music theory, Paul occasionally teaches a special topics course of his own design that he calls The Art of Popular Song. This graduate-level course instructs students on the theory and craft of songwriting from 1900 to the present.
Dell Aquila is regularly nominated a University of Louisville Faculty Favorite by his students and is invited to attend the Faculty Favorites Award and Dinner celebration held by the university provost each year.
Paul Dell Aquila is a certified audio engineer. He received his audio engineer certification in 2010 after successfully completing audio training programs at the Lexington School for Recording Arts in Lexington, Kentucky. In addition to his education and certification from the Lexington school, Paul has over 25 years hands-on experience in the field of audio recording and production. He has been recording on Avid's state-of-the-art Pro Tools HD recording platform since the 1990s. Paul also has extensive knowledge and experience in electronic music and MIDI sound production. He studied in New York at Hofstra University with Herbert Deutsch (co-inventor of the music synthesizer with Robert Moog and author of the esteemed textbook Synthesis, An Introduction to the History, Theory, and Practice of Electronic Music, Alfred Publishing Company, Inc.).
Paul Dell Aquila was born on Long Island, New York. He began his musical studies at the age of ten in his hometown, Farmingdale, with the direction of esteemed music educator and retailer Al Lacausi. After graduating high school, Paul entered Nassau Community College (Uniondale, New York) where he studied classical guitar with composer and author Stanley Solo (Mel Bay Publishing) and renowned New York concert classical guitarist and professor William Zito. Dell Aquila remained at Nassau Community College for two semesters. He achieved the dean's honor list both terms and was subsequently elected to the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society for Community Colleges.
Paul transferred to Hofstra University of Hempstead, New York, in 1986 where he continued his studies in the field of music composition and theory. (Hofstra University, incidentally, is ranked in the top ten percent of all private universities in the United States.) While working on a music composition/theory degree at Hofstra University, Paul pursued private studies in jazz guitar and music arranging with New York session musician and author Howard Morgan. Mr. Morgan is a regular contributor to Guitar Player Magazine and the author of the popular fingerstyle guitar method book series, Finger Style Jazz Guitar.
In 1988, Dell Aquila earned a bachelor of science degree in Music Composition from Hofstra University. He achieved the dean’s honor list at Hofstra University in 1986 and 1987.
While in New York actively studying music on the private and formal levels, Paul regularly composed music. As a participating member of the Long Island Composers Alliance, Dell Aquila composed many works for various classical ensembles. In addition to traditional classical music composition, Paul was active in pop songwriting and radio jingle production. Some of Dell Aquila's jingles are aired regularly on New York radio stations. Those familiar with WBAB (102.3 FM) on Long Island (Long Island's largest rock radio station) are often intrigued to learn that Paul composed the “Friday Morning Crank Call” jingle used by legendary Long Island disc jockey Bob Buchmann.
In 1991, one of Paul's music compositions took first place in the Mid-Atlantic Songwriter Competition, and he accepted an award at a ceremony at the Hard Rock Cafe of Washington D.C. That same year, another of Paul's songs won first prize in the Virginia Organization of Composers, Authors, and Lyricists (V.O.C.A.L.) song competition. Dell Aquila also had four songs place in the top ten percent of Billboard Magazine's World Wide Song Search contest of 1992. In the mid nineties, Paul and his wife Grace relocated to Louisville, Kentucky, where another of Paul's songs won first prize in the Louisville Area Songwriters’ Cooperative Song Competition (1994). The next year, Dell Aquila was elected president of the Louisville Area Songwriters’ Cooperative by the organization's members.
While composing music and performing with his wife under the name Another Colour, Paul began working on a master of music degree in music theory at the University of Louisville. After earning his masters degree in music theory from the University of Louisville in 2003 with an all-A transcript, Paul was elected to the Phi Kappa Phi National All University Honor Society.
Dell Aquila has been a member of the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (A.S.C.A.P.) since 1985. While living in the Cherokee Park area of Louisville, Kentucky, Paul composed the song “Cherokee Park,” which has gained recognition in the city. In 2001, this song was added to the Encyclopedia of Louisville (published by University Press of Kentucky) in an article about Louisville songs and songwriters by author Robert B. French.
In 2006, Dell Aquila was commissioned by the Abbey Road of the River Festival to transcribe and arrange music of the Beatles that was performed by full orchestra and rock band at the Beatles festival on the Ohio River.
Currently, Paul is enjoying his continued service as guitarist, vocalist, songwriter, and audio engineer-producer for Another Colour®, Inc., a music ensemble that he co-founded with his wife in 1985. Through the years, Another Colour has shared the stage with numerous national touring acts including Pat Benatar, REO Speedwagon, Arlo Guthrie, Warren Zevon, Marshall Tucker Band, Grand Funk Railroad, and John Cafferty, among others. The duo has performed multiple times for the Derby Festival of Louisville, at Churchill Downs Racetrack and around the city of Louisville, during the annual Kentucky Derby celebration.
When not performing and recording with Another Colour, or not at the university campus, Dell Aquila provides occasional private guitar lessons using a personal guitar instruction method he devised called, “Guitar Logic.”
Paul also continues his scholastic research in areas where he finds joy and passion: music theory, music composition, audio production-engineering, songwriting, guitar pedagogy, and poetry.
